ABOUT

Gabe Cariola

As a kid, I discovered my dad's PenTex K1000 in the attic and have been photographing since.  Graduated with a BFA in Photography at Tyler in 2004, I have worked as a professional photographer for 15 years and have been throwing pottery since college.

At 42, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease (PD).  I was (am) scared, increasingly determined and working towards acceptance. Not long after joining my first Mission PD Mindfulness and Meditation session, I was inspired to photograph people like me.  Pottery, photography, and other passions of mine like fly fishing are challenged by symptoms of PD.  What's challenging can also be healing.   This is why I'm here.

----

Parkinson’s Disease is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination.

Symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen over time. As the disease progresses, people may have difficulty walking and talking. They may also have mental and behavioral changes, sleep problems, depression, memory difficulties, and fatigue.
